Summer Rock N’ Roll. 20/07/2013

As the summer heat wave hit the Isle of Man, Special Olympics Isle of Man held their Summer Party at the Manx Legion Club in Douglas on the 19th July. The weather may have been over 24 degrees but our athletes looked pretty cool on the dance floor. The entertainment generously performed free of charge by Shawaddywaddy tribute band Shoddywaddy kept everyone on the dance floor boogieing the night away. The event raised £750 enabling us to continue our work helping the Isle on Mans men, women and children with intellectual disabilities achieve their potential through sport.

Anne Dooley, from the Highways Licensing division, organised the fundraising effort by arranging a dress down day and cake sale for colleagues, and then taking on the epic challenge of the Parish Walk in memory of SO IoM athlete Gareth Cowin, who sadly passed away during the Special Olympics World Winter Games at PyeongChang in South Korea earlier this year.

Runners Up Spot For SO IOM Football Team. 03/11/2013

The Special Olympics Isle of Man football team were runners up at the Merseyside Cup held in Liverpool on Saturday. After arriving late due to a cancelled boat the team had to play their three round robin matches back to back, Head Coach Mick Curran commented “they played amazingly well, winning all three games comfortably”.

Unfortunately playing back to back matches took its toll and they were beaten 4-0 in the final by Everton who have won the tournament for the last two years.

Double Bronze for Hattersley in National Cycling Championships at Tameside  5/08/2013

Special Olympics, Isle of Man cyclist Christopher Hattersley returned from the Great Britain National Championships with two Bronze medals and a fourth place to his credit.

The 4th place was achieved on day 1 in the 10km time trial, where Christopher was beaten by 1 second by the Bronze medal winner Ruairidh Brown who was representing Scotland West.

On day 2 of the competition Christopher picked up a Bronze medal in the morning’s 15 km road race, which was run off in damp and windy conditions. This event was won by Kevin Hughes Scotland West Daniel Weston South West Region and member of the Minehead Cycling Club. The final event and climax to the Championships was the 25km road race. This was Christopher’s first competitive experience of road racing at this distance and he acquitted himself very well. Unfortunately, he lost out in a 3 up sprint finish, which was won by Ruairidh Brown from Kevin Hughes. The two Scottish team mates controlled the race well throughout and they took it in turn to bring back the attacks from the Manx rider.

Christopher was very happy with his weekend’s work, as the Great Britain Nationals this year were a Great Britain Special Olympics selection event for riders wishing to take part in the European Summer Games to be held September 2014 in Antwerp.
